Skateboard Deck Manufacturing Info
Quality Ingredients:
The materials used are all of the highest quality. We use North American Maple (AKA Canadian Maple, American Maple, Sugar Maple, etc. wood species- Acer Saccharum) laminated together with skateboard specific glue. Trees are responsibility harvested and glue is environmentally friendly (No/Low VOC and waterbased).
What is Canadian Maple, American Maple, Hard Rock Maple, and Sugar Maple?
North American Maple has many names like Canadian Maple, American Maple, Hard Rock Maple, and Sugar Maple. These names refer only to one species: Acer Saccharum. We use just one wood species in our seven ply skateboard maple construction: Acer Saccharum(the most important ingredient) and comes from the Great Lakes region of North America(America/Canada). The logs for our skateboard maple are individually selected and graded to yield the best veneer to make a skateboard.
Modern Manufacturing Process:
The lamination process is done at room temperature. This is known as ‘cold pressing’. This allows for the glue to slow cure and avoids damaging the veneer with heat. The pressing procedure takes 1 to 1.5 hours to cure in-mold. After that the newly pressed and glued veneers are allowed to cure for 1 week in large stacks. Truck holes are made with a gang drill. The specific shapes are then cut out of the ‘uncuts’ with either a CNC machine or a shaper. Routing and edge sanding happens next. Sanding and then coating with lacquer two times are the final steps before printing. More info.
Advanced Printing Techniques:
There are multiple techniques that we use to print skateboard decks. Digital transfers being the most popular. This involves combinations of digital printing, screen printing, and coatings to plastic carrier sheets. These carrier sheets only serve as a transport mechanism for the inks. These printed sheets are aligned to the skateboard deck and a heat transfer machine (silicone roller machine specifically built for skateboard deck printing) is used to adhere the ink from the transfer sheet to the specially developed coatings of the skateboard deck. After some curing time the transfer carrier sheet is removed leaving a graphic that is chemically bonded to the wood of the skateboard deck(not a sticker, not sublimation). Some other print methods are screen printed transfers and direct screen printing. Similar to digital transfers but with each color screen printed to the carrier sheet. Direct screen printing has many limitations and quality issues, we limit it to very simple one color prints.

Quick Steps to design your custom printed skateboard deck:
Upload your art file
High resolution jpeg or png files are acceptable. What is high resolution? From a purely mathematical view 300 dpi at actual print size (approximately 8 inches x 32 inches) is recommended. But many times lower dpi will look okay. The easiest way to get an idea if the graphic is too of low res is to look at the graphic at actual print size. Simply open the file in any graphics program on a full size computer monitor and zoom in until the graphic is close to the size it will print. This link explains it better: How to check if a graphic’s resolution is OK?
Arrange your art.
Move you art around with the cursor. Your art can be scaled larger/smaller by grabbing the corners or using the transform tool bar at the bottom of the image.
Add your design elements.
You have the option of adding text, pre built backgrounds, and hand drawing. Each option has a transform tool bar that is accessible when you add one of the design elements to the template.
Manage layers. Very important!
If you have more than one design element it is likely that the layer order will be incorrect. (like your background image covering your text). Click on the manage layers tab to adjust your elements position. You can arrange front to back by dragging the ‘≡’ with your cursor.
Final check.
On each online design template there is a thick light gray transparent line, this represents the margin of error for the print location. Please keep any important design elements to the inside of this area, things like text you don’t want to cut off. On the multiple decks same graphic online templates there is just a line representing the live area for each deck size. Please be aware a few mms of shifting of your graphic may occur. See this for more info: Common design problems with custom skateboard artwork.
Place the order.
If you are satisfied with your design, scroll down and select the qty you want and add to cart.
Questionable design?
Our reps review submitted artwork for design issues like low resolution. We’ll email you before processing if we see a noticeable resolution issue. Don’t use artwork that you don’t have a right to; trademarked, copyrighted, and other images.
